Ty  Cobb  at  age 70

Ty Cobb was a 12-time Batting Champion who averaged .367 for his career.  When he was 70 years old, a reporter asked him how he would fare against the current pitchers of the 1950's.  Cobb replied that he thought he could bat about .290.
The reporter observed, "Your lifetime average was a lot higher than that.  You must think today's pitching is better than what you faced in the prime of your career ?"
Cobb glared at the reporter,  "For god's sake man, I'm 70 years old.  Do you think I should hit .360 ?"

Why hasn't Detroit retired Ty Cobb's number ?

Cobb didn't have a number on the back of his uniform; he played in the era before numbers were introduced.
